About This Spot

Stepping into Esplanada Dark, nestled on Rua Tras do Castelo in the heart of Madalena, feels like entering a vibrant crossroads of tradition and warmth. The space carries a cozy yet lively rhythm, where the gentle hum of friendly conversation mingles with the inviting clinks from behind the bar. Whether you're drawn by the promise of a relaxed morning coffee, a lively evening cocktail, or a satisfying meal, the atmosphere invites you to settle in and savor the moment.

Here, the pace is unhurried but animated, embracing a spirit of genuine hospitality that makes you feel more like a welcomed guest than a visitor. The intertwining aromas of fresh-baked cakes, earthy cheeses, and the mingling scents of robust coffee and fine wine set the stage for moments that go beyond just dining — they become memories woven into the fabric of this charming corner on the island of Pico.

The kitchen reflects the vibrant local palate, offering combinations that are at once familiar and refreshingly thoughtful. Dishes like tender, perfectly seasoned octopus salads or the hearty, comforting generosity of a burger resonate with a sense of care and passion, as does the attentive attention to both vegetarian and meaty options. Mornings here start with simple pleasures—crispy, well-cooked eggs paired with the kind of bacon that strikes the perfect balance between savory and crisp—setting a tone of comfort and delight for the day ahead.

Esplanada Dark’s blend of cafe, beer store, cocktail bar, and casual eatery makes it a versatile stop; it carries the warmth of a neighborhood haunt while inviting discovery for those wandering through. Whether you’re seeking a restorative breakfast before a dive, a relaxed lunch, or an evening drink accompanied by local cheese and wine, the space is hospitable and unpretentious, buoyed by the kindness and passion of its people.

What lingers most isn’t just the food or drink, but the human moments — the smiles exchanged across tables, the quiet care poured into every plate, and the stories shared with the humble chef who connects deeply to the land and its flavors. This is not just a place to eat or drink; it’s a place to belong, even if just for a little while.

Out-of-this-world breakfast! We had fried eggs with bacon and it was absolutely delicious – simple, but perfectly prepared, with crispy bacon and eggs just the way we like them. The service was incredibly friendly and welcoming. You could really feel the genuine hospitality. We highly recommend this place – a perfect start to the day on the beautiful island of Pico!

THE breakfast spot if you are looking for more than just pastries. We had bacon, egg, cheese and avocado breakfast sandwiches with salad and fresh fruit, good coffee and freshly squeezed watermelon juice. Conveniently located next to the dive shops too

Amazing food and warm staff. A cook (the only person there) prepared us two breakfasts - one vegan, one with meat. Both were diverse, colorful and tasty.

Went here when I was having hip/back problems, it was also raining. Lila the lady who was there was very warm & very passionate about the food/process of dining gained from family in Brazil. Amazing brunch & lovely sugarless smoothies & coffee too. The dog was awesome too! Came & sat on my feet
